Galveston, Texas - Opened in 1965, the Flagship Hotel in Galveston, Texas, stood as a unique landmark in the city known as the “Coney Island of the South” for four decades. The seven-story hotel was built entirely on a pier extending out over the Gulf of Mexico and featured 225 rooms, panoramic gulf views, a swimming pool, and nautical decor. Unfortunately, the hotel’s overwater location left it vulnerable to natural disasters, and it was damaged beyond repair by Hurricane Ike in 2008. The hotel has since been replaced with the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, which opened in 2012 and features retail, restaurants, and carnival rides. :
