Pioneer 10 - Launched in March 1972, Pioneer 10 accomplished several firsts in space travel. It became the first spacecraft to fly beyond Mars and the first to reach Jupiter. It was also the first to fly through an asteroid belt and then the first to leave our solar system. On board Pioneer 10 was a plaque, showing images of a man and a woman and diagrams of the solar system. It was intended to serve as a map to Earth for any extraterrestrials who might find the ship. Pioneer 10's mission officially ended in 1997. However, it continued to send occasional transmissions until 2002 when the signal finally became too faint.:
