Maryland - Maryland is the only one of the original 13 colonies to still fly a flag based on the one flown under British rule. The Lords Baltimore founded the colony in the 1630s, and that history is reflected in the state’s flag and the state seal today. In opposite quadrants, the flag bears the gold and black arms of the Calvert family. The red and white colors in the remaining two quadrants comes from the first Lord Baltimore, George Calvert’s mother, of the Crossland family. The flag was first used during a Founder’s Day Parade in 1880, which marked the state’s 150th anniversary. It was officially adopted as the state flag in 1904.:
