When workers burned pine boughs and their sap to create tar and pitch, they would often do so barefoot in the summer. The result was blackened heels, which were deemed “tar heels or “rosin heels.” Those in the trade were given this nickname, oftentimes derisively. Since North Carolina led the early tar industry, many naval supplies were made in the state during the Civil War. Soldiers from the region adopted the name “Tar Heels” with pride — leading to the official state nickname, the “Tar Heel State.” :
