Bubble gum - Chewing gum had been popular in the U.S. since the 1870s when it was first manufactured. However, it wasn't until 1928 that an accountant for the Fleer Chewing Gum Co. named Walter Diemer accidentally created bubble gum. Diemer started experimenting with making his own gum in his spare time. A batch did not turn out as planned, but he did notice that it was stretchier than usual and could be used to blow bubbles. After a trial batch sold out at one grocery in an afternoon, Diemer gave the recipe to Fleer and they began marketing Dubble Bubble. So why is bubble gum pink? It was the only food dye that Diemer had on hand when he made the batch. :
