Scotland - Scotland’s Ferniehirst Castle is a haven for lefties. The 16th-century castle, located near the town of Jedburgh and the English border, is designed for the left-handed. Typically, spiral staircases in medieval castles were built with defense in mind. When ascending, the staircase would turn in a clockwise direction, allowing occupants to keep their sword-carrying right hand against the narrowest part of the stairs. According to legend, the staircase in this castle was built the opposite way because one of the castle's original occupants, Sir Andrew Kerr, was left-handed. After returning from battle, he apparently trained his knights to fight with their left hand. This is also said to be the origin of the Scottish phrase "Kerr-handed," meaning a person who predominantly uses their left hand.:
