St. Helena - In 1799, Napoleon seized power in France and quickly became a powerful leader. By 1804, he had been crowned Emperor of France and for the next decade, he continued to expand his empire with multiple military victories. However, in 1814 he was defeated by an allied force and was sent to the Italian island of Elba. Napoleon soon managed an audacious escape and raised a new army. His freedom was short-lived as in 1815, he was defeated by the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo. This time, to ensure he could never escape, Napoleon was exiled to the remote island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. The former Emperor lived out his final days there until he died in 1821. :
