Step 2 : Answer to the question "Where is the National Aquarium of the U.S.?"
Baltimore, Maryland - The nation’s first public aquarium opened its doors in 1873 in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and five years later, the facility was moved to the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. and became the National Aquarium. In 1932, the aquarium relocated again to the Department of Commerce building. Meanwhile, in the 1970s, Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer sought to build an aquarium in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor as a key component of the city’s revitalization. Although federal funds weren’t used for the project, Congress later designated the facility a National Aquarium, operating in conjunction with the D.C. location. After the D.C. aquarium closed its doors in 2013, the Baltimore location — home to more than 17,000 animals and 750 species — became the nation’s sole National Aquarium. About 1.5 million people visit annually, making it the most popular tourist attraction in Maryland.:
