Built in an abandoned quarry that was active until the 1950s, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is a 336-room luxury hotel, but it’s only two stories tall — the other sixteen floors sit below ground. And two of the hotel’s floors are actually underwater, home to six underwater suites that each have their own saltwater aquariums. Designed in a yin-yang shape to reference the balance between nature and man, the hotel descends to a lake at the bottom of the quarry. The hotel faced many architectural challenges and took over 12 years to complete, finally opening in late 2018.:
