Formed by the Akosombo Dam and the Volta River, Lake Volta has a storage capacity of 124,000,000 acre-feet. Mead, the largest reservoir in the U.S., only has about a fifth of that capacity, at 28,945,000 acre-feet. Spanning 3,283 square miles, the 250-mile-long lake is navigable, offering routes that link the coast with Ghana’s savanna in the north. The lake also supplies farmers with irrigation water and fishermen with plenty of work. The dam powers nearly the entire country.:
