Great Ocean Road, Australia - Not only is Great Ocean Road one of the most scenic coastal routes in Australia, but it’s the largest war memorial in the world, stretching 150 miles from Torquay to Allansford in Victoria. Starting in 1919, the memorial was built by soldiers in the First World War. The road project was to provide soldiers employment upon their return home, and more than 3,000 soldiers who worked on the road slept in tent cities along the way. It took thirteen years to complete the road in 1932. Victoria’s Lieutenant Governor Sir William Irvine led the opening ceremony, in which Great Ocean Road was made an official War Memorial dedicated to those Australian soldiers who’d perished during the war.:
