Argentina and the U.K. - The Falklands War of 1982 was a 10-week battle between Argentina and Britain over the Falkland Islands, a group of islands located about 300 miles off the coast of Argentina. Though the islands are remote and sparsely populated, Argentina claimed sovereignty due to being the closest nation and its supposed inheritance in the 1800s from the Spanish crown. However, British forces claimed the islanders were almost entirely of British descent and should self-determine to which country they belong. The Falklands were first settled in 1764 by a French explorer, and a year later by the British, after which Britain and Spain fought over the islands regularly. Argentina first proclaimed sovereignty over the Falklands in 1820. After the short war in 1982, diplomatic relations between Argentina and Britain chilled until they were restored in 1990. The islands remain a British Overseas Territory.:
