Alice Coachman - Alice Coachman made Olympic history in 1948 when she won a gold medal in the high jump, and in doing so, became the first Black woman to win Olympic gold. The Georgia-born athlete also set a new record of 5 feet, 6 and 1/8 inches. Growing up, Coachman was often barred from competing in events because of her race and so she practiced barefoot at home. Later, a high school coach noticed her talent and helped her get a college scholarship. She probably could have achieved fame earlier but World War II led to the cancellation of the 1940 and 1944 Olympic Games. In addition to her Olympic achievement, Coachman has been inducted into nine different sporting halls of fame.:
