Louisiana - You’ll have to head south to find the nation’s tallest state capitol building, which is in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As it turns out, capitol buildings in the U.S. aren’t actually all that tall — at 34 floors and 450 feet, the Louisiana capitol is only the seventh tallest in the state (though the highest in Baton Rouge). However, that is plenty tall enough for a 27th-floor observation deck that offers panoramic views of the city skyline and surrounding gardens. Completed in 1932 at a cost of $5 million, the building was the brainchild of Governor Huey P. Long, who was known as “the Kingfish.” Sadly, it was also the site of his assassination in 1935, as he was killed there by the son-in-law of his long-time opponent. Long was buried on the grounds of the Capitol and is also memorialized by a statue facing it.:
