St Joseph, MO and Sacramento, CA - The famed Pony Express was a mail delivery system between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California. Early mail delivery was the true definition of snail mail, taking weeks to make it across the country via stagecoach. The Pony Express was offered as a faster alternative, taking just 10 days to cross the 2,000 miles between cities. The design was that of rider relays stationed across the country at various stops. A rider would race to a certain point and hand off his load to a waiting rider who was ready with a fresh horse. A rider would cover up to 100 miles on horseback and the system was shockingly efficient, losing only a single bag of mail in its 18-month run. Unfortunately the service was rendered obsolete when the transcontinental telegraph system was completed in 1861.:
