Early mail delivery was the true definition of snail mail, taking weeks to make it across the country via stagecoach. The Pony Express was offered as a faster alternative, taking just 10 days to cross the 2,000 miles between cities. The design was that of rider relays stationed across the country at various stops. A rider would race to a certain point and hand off his load to a waiting rider who was ready with a fresh horse. A rider would cover up to 100 miles on horseback and the system was shockingly efficient, losing only a single bag of mail in its 18-month run.
