But the rough-and-tumble tagline for the Lone Star State actually came from a much less intimidating source: an anti-litter campaign from the 1980’s. The state was spending $20 million each year for trash pick-up, so the Texas Department of Transportation chose to invest in a marketing campaign to get those costs down. Austin advertising agency GSD&M coined the slogan as a call for Texans to keep their state beautiful and litter-free. Based on data, men from 16 to 24 were major contributors to litter, so the slogan’s attitude spoke directly to its target audience. Jeff Austin III, the Texas Transportation Commissioner stated, “It’s not just a prideful remark, trying to pick a fight; it’s don’t litter in Texas, don’t mess up Texas.” And it worked. A year later, roadside litter had been reduced by nearly 30% and, in four years, 72%. :
