Osborne Computers - Compared to today's sleek laptops, the first portable computer released way back in 1981 by Osborne Computers was a bulky brick. Weighing a whopping 25 pounds, lugging around the Osborne 1 was quite the arm workout. With its 5-inch screen, it wasn't anything like the laptops of today. In fact, the word “laptop” wasn't even around when it was invented and wouldn't appear until years later when the Gavilan SC was released in 1983. Costing a hefty $1,800 at the time (around $4,900 now), the Osborne 1 was a luxury item unlike the affordable laptops offered today. The system did not have a rechargeable battery but did have some sweet dual floppy disk drives. This was the dawn of a new era, and many competing systems were released soon after. In time, rechargeable batteries were introduced and weights were trimmed down considerably, allowing users to carry their systems with ease.:
