Massachusetts - Without the state of Massachusetts, we might not have two of our favorite sports: volleyball and basketball. Both sports originated there during the late 19th century. James Naismith, head of the Physical Education department at the Springfield YMCA, is credited for creating basketball in 1891. In 1896, William Morgan did the same for volleyball as the P.E. director for the Holyoke YMCA, just 8 miles away. Early basketball involved tackling and major injuries until new rules were imposed, but the sport quickly gained popularity. As for volleyball, Morgan created it as a less intense alternative to basketball, even inventing a new ball for the sport. The popular sports were inaugurated into the Olympic program, with basketball debuting at the Berlin Olympics in 1936; volleyball first made the official program at Tokyo’s 1964 Olympics.:
