French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi had originally pitched the idea of a “robe-clad woman representing Egypt” to the Egyptians when they were building the Suez Canal in the 1850s. Ultimately, Egypt turned down Bartholdi's proposal, stating it was too expensive, so the artist pivoted — turning his concept originally called “Egypt Carrying the Light to Asia” into a “colossal goddess.” Bartholdi began pitching his concept, “Liberty Enlightening the World” to the United States. Despite a slow start in fundraising and interest, the design and construction of the project had Americans finally seeing the light.:
