Built of more than 24,000 blocks of Guadarrama granite, the aqueduct featured no mortar. And yet, the aqueduct remains standing today, as one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts in the world. Called “El Puente” (or “The Bridge”) in Spanish, the 2,388-foot-long and 93-foot-tall structure consists of 165 stone arches and carries water to the city from the Frío River 10 miles away.:
