Mona Lisa - The “Mona Lisa” was swiped from the Louvre in the early morning hours of August 21, 1911, by Vincenzo Perugia and brothers Vincenzo and Michele Lancellotti. The men were hoping to turn a quick profit but were unable to sell due to the attention surrounding its theft. Rather than risking it all, the painting was hidden in a Parisian trunk for 28 months by Perugia, resurfacing in Florence when he tried to sell it off to an art dealer unsuccessfully. Perugia was arrested and the painting was returned to its home in the Louvre. Oddly enough, the theft went unnoticed for over a day. There were some renovations going on that could have been to blame, but the painting also wasn’t as world famous as it is today. In fact, it was rarely heard of outside of the art community. Once the victim of a sensational art heist, the "Mona Lisa” was suddenly thrust into fame. :
