Aaron Burr - On July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr squared off in Weehawken, New Jersey, to settle a long-standing disagreement between the two. Burr felt insulted by Hamilton’s characterizations of him in government. In those days, insulting one’s honor often led to a call for a duel. Hamilton accepted, though intended to throw away his shot in an attempt to settle the score with a shake of hands, a gentleman’s move at the time. Unfortunately for Hamilton, Burr didn’t feel the same and fired an ultimately-fatal shot into his lower abdomen. Hamilton passed away the following day. At the time, everyone from senators to future President Andrew Jackson participated in duels. While illegal, it was a surprisingly common practice.:
