However, it started as a challenge between just two nations: the U.S. and Great Britain. In 1899, the Harvard University tennis team decided to propose a national tournament against Britain. Dwight Davis, one of the players, designed the tournament and paid for the trophy. The International Lawn Tennis Challenge as it was known when it began in 1900 soon was renamed for Davis. Over the years, additional countries entered the tournament. Russia won the 2021 Davis Cup, beating the Croatian team in Spain.:
