The central river is known as the “Crooked River,” alongside which is the longest paved rail-trail in the state — the 46-mile-long Withlacoochee State Trail. Originating in the Green Swamp and taking a couple of turns before heading northwest to drain in the Gulf of Mexico, this river is said to be named after the northern river of the same name. Stretching 115 miles, the northern river originates in Georgia before flowing south into Florida, where it only flows a mere 1.34 miles before returning north.:
