Mexico - Deep below Naica mountain in the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico lies the Cave of Crystals. Only discovered in 2000, the nearly 100-foot-long cave is home to gigantic single crystals of gypsum. According to Guinness World Records, the largest measures over 36 feet long and weighs an estimated 55 tons. It’s thought to have been growing for more than 500,000 years. Back then, the cave was drenched in warm, mineral-rich water, which made it an ideal spot for crystal formation. It’s still a great place for crystals, but a hazardous place for humans — temperatures can reach up to 136 degrees Fahrenheit, with 90 to 99 percent humidity. Researchers who explore the cave are limited to 45 minutes inside and must wear special cooling suits. :
