Designated a National Historic Landmark, Elfreth's Alley is a small cobblestone street named for Jeremiah Elfreth, a blacksmith who owned property in the area. The street dates back to Philadelphia's early days in 1703, when a number of artisans and tradespeople lived and worked along the alley. Thirty-two houses still stand along the alley, with two serving as a museum.:
