Michigan - With dunes rising more than 400 feet above the waters of Lake Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan offers some of the Great Lakes’ most dramatic vistas. The park includes 35 miles of sandy beaches, and invites visitors to tackle the challenging climb up the sandy dunes. Sleeping Bear Dunes was named for Native American tales of a Mother Bear (the largest dune) lying down to rest with her two cubs (North and South Manitou islands.) The passage between the islands and the mainland is protected as an underwater preserve. More than a thousand shipwrecks lie at the bottom of Lake Michigan. Ship fragments occasionally wash ashore on the sandy beaches, offering just a glimpse of maritime history in the area.:
