One of its most prominent industrialists in the glass industry was Edward Drumond Libbey, who moved New England Glass to Toledo in 1888 and renamed it Libbey. He helped found the Toledo Museum of Art in 1901, which featured a significant collection of glass art works, true to the city’s heritage, including rare pieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods — many are the only ones of their kind that exist in the U.S. In the 1920s, Toledo’s glass collection was recognized as the most important collection in the country by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its collection continues to grow; in 2006, the museum opened the Glass Pavilion to display and cultivate works of art in glass.:
