California - About an hour’s drive northeast from Sacramento, you’ll find a town in Nevada County, California, called Rough and Ready. The name doesn’t have anything to do with its resident’s attitudes — rather, it’s a nod to the 12th president of the United States, Zachary Taylor. The town was named by one Captain A.A. Townsend, who arrived in 1849 and found gold. Townsend had served in the Mexican War under Taylor, and decided to name the town after the president’s nickname, Old Rough and Ready. Shortly thereafter, Rough and Ready briefly decided to secede from the nation over concerns about taxation with representation. But “The Republic of Rough and Ready” didn’t last long, after its citizens reportedly tried to buy booze in a nearby town and were rejected as foreigners. :
