Oil company Texaco started a variety show in 1948, Four singing servicemen introduced the show's host, Milton Berle. The show is credited with selling more TV sets than any other, and it became so popular in the 1940s and '50s that as many as 90% of all TV sets in the U.S. tuned in to watch "Uncle Miltie." Those who didn't have TVs would crowd around store windows to watch it. Originally several hosts were supposed to alternate, but Berle was so popular that he took over. It was eventually renamed "The Milton Berle Show.":
