Algeria - Founded around 100 CE, the Roman city of Timgad was a military colony built in the Aurรจs Mountains of northeastern Algeria. Originally named Colonia Marciana Ulpia Traiana Thamugadi, the city was founded by Roman Emperor Trajan and its original grid-style planning is still apparent today. The streets were laid out in a perfect square and paved with limestone slabs. Timgad was destroyed by Vandals in 430, rebuilt in the sixth century, and then destroyed again by Arab forces in the seventh century. The city was abandoned sometime in the eighth century until the city was excavated from under the sand in 1881.:
