Pittsburgh - The Monongahela Incline has been traveling up and down a steep city hill in Pittsburgh since 1870, making it the country’s oldest continuously operating funicular. Named after the Monongahela River that flows below it, it was primarily built for coal and steel workers in the area. Funiculars were common in Germany at the time, and since many of the workers were German immigrants, they proposed the funicular be constructed to make their commutes a little less taxing. It was a success, and soon after Pittsburgh had a network of 17 funicular railways throughout the city. Only two in the Mount Washington neighborhood are still in service, including Monongahela and nearby Duquesne Incline, which opened in 1877.:
