Florida - Located in the Florida Keys, Fort Jefferson is actually part of one of America's most isolated national parks. Dry Tortugas National Park consists of several sandy keys, as well as a massive marine reserve to protect ocean wildlife. While the park is technically part of the United States, it's not exactly attached. Visitors need to hop on a seaplane or ferryboat to make the 70-mile trek from the Florida mainland. Fort Jefferson was built in the 19th century over 30 years, but was never fully completed, as the construction workers realized the heavy bricks they were fortifying the building with were actually sinking it. Saltwater was another foe, causing the iron shutters of the fort's prison to rust and expand, further damaging the walls. While the NPS has said they won't rebuild the fort, they are actively working to keep it afloat by trying to stop existing damage from spreading.:
