One is Thomas Jefferson, who was a leading architect of the westward expansion — at one point, the park was originally called the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. The Gateway Arch is also officially dedicated to Dred Scott, a former enslaved person who unsuccessfully sued for his freedom in a landmark case of 1857.
