Philadelphia - The cheesesteak is the pride and joy of Philadelphia. The iconic sandwich consists of chopped or sliced ribeye beef served on a long bread roll (a hoagie) and topped with melted cheese — provolone, American, or Cheez Whiz. Common additions include peppers, onions, and mushrooms. The Philadelphia cheesesteak has been around since at least 1930. Hot dog vendor Pat Olivieri is said to have invented the steak sandwich at his hot dog stand before opening up his shop, Pat’s King of Steaks, where he added cheese to the sandwich.
