Step 2 : Answer to the question "Which U.S. state has a piece of land that belongs to England?"
North Carolina - The state of North Carolina features an unusual plot of land that is permanently leased to Great Britain. Despite what you might assume, it’s not a holdover from British rule in the colonies. Rather, it’s a memorial for Royal Navy sailors lost during World War II. During Operation Drumbeat, German U-boats targeted merchant ships leaving U.S. ports, filled with supplies for the Allies. The operation was successful, sinking 35 American ships in January 1942 alone. Unable to defend against the Germans, the U.S. enlisted help from their British allies, who sent ships to patrol the U.S. East Coast. One of those was the Bedfordshire, which was sunk by a German U-Boat in May 1942, with all those aboard lost. Four of the sailors' bodies washed up on the island of Ocracoke, where local residents buried them and created a monument. The island residents later decided to lease the land where the sailors were buried to Great Britain in perpetuity, which means it’s considered part of British soil. :
