The resulting cold, wet summer of 1816 caused crop failures across Europe, and in North America, there was frost and snow. It was during the dark and gloomy "year without summer" that Lord Byron, Claire Clairmont, Dr. John William Polidori, Percy and Mary Shelley assembled in a villa overlooking Lake Geneva. Here they challenged each other to write ghost stories, resulting in Byron's poem "Darkness," Polidori's short story "The Vampyre," and Mary Shelley's masterpiece, "Frankenstein.":
