The Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto is home to 13,000 shoes that span 4,500 years of history — from saffron-colored mojaris worn by 19th-century temple dancers in India to clogs made for crushing chestnuts in France. The collection was assembled by Sonja Bata beginning in the 1940s, when she would travel the world with her husband, Thomas J. Bata, on business trips for the Bata Shoe Company. In 1979, her family established the Bata Shoe Museum Foundation to handle the now-sizable collection. After years of being on display in various Toronto offices, the collection found a permanent home when the Bata Shoe Museum opened in 1995. The striking building was designed by architect Raymond Moriyama to resemble a shoe box. :
