Bourbon King Charles III commissioned the palace in the mid-18th century, desiring a royal residence that would rival Versailles. He ruled Naples as King Charles VII from 1734 to 1759 until his half-brother died, making him King Charles III of Spain. Construction of the royal palace began in 1752, but architect Luigi Vanvitelli’s grand plans were only partially completed. The structure is five stories tall and includes a chapel, library, and theater, as well as manicured gardens, surrounding woods, and a hunting lodge. The complex even once included a silk factory.:
