Brazil - The city of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil, is split by a 280-foot-tall cliff, separating the “high city” from the “lower city.” In 1610, a rope-and-pulley crane system was built to move goods and transport people up and down the cliffside. In 1873, businessman Antônio de Lacerda added a steam-powered elevator, and today, the elevator is still named “Elevador Lacerda” in his honor. In 1930, it was redesigned to include a walkway, and in 1961, the elevator cars were updated to carry 32 people at a time. Today, the elevator has four elevator cars — each capable of carrying 128 people at a time. Elevador Lacerda can travel 240 feet up the cliffside in under 30 seconds!:
