However, the Chinese people living on the island resisted Japanese rule, and on May 23, 1895, they declared their independence from Japan and established the Republic of Formosa. The newly formed republic lasted for only five months before the Japanese regained control of the island. They occupied the island for more than 50 years until they relinquished control at the end of World War II.:
