Puebla, Mexico - Biblioteca Palafoxiana in Puebla, Mexico, opened in 1646 with the donation of a 5,000-volume private collection. Bishop Don Francisco Fabián y Fuero ordered the construction of the building in Puebla’s city center in 1773. The library collection grew to over 41,000 volumes in the 19th century, so the third tier of shelves was added to the original building. Unfortunately, during an earthquake in 1999, the heavier third tier of bookshelves collapsed onto the two lower, older tiers. After massive reconstruction, Biblioteca Palafoxiana reopened in 2003.:
