Kansas City, Missouri - The city of Kansas City, Missouri, started adding fountains in the late 1800s, but they were simple fountains — offering drinking water only for livestock. The city then built a number of water fountains in a variety of themes and architectural styles, and, as time went on, the designs became increasingly elaborate. In 1973, an executive from the Kansas City-based greeting card company Hallmark worked to restore the city’s fountains. He created the City of Fountains Foundation to maintain and build new fountains downtown. There are more than 200 registered fountains in the city — 48 of which are publicly owned. Each spring, the city celebrates Greater Kansas City Fountain Day when the fountains are turned back on after a quiet winter.:
