Dickinson began writing poetry in the late 1850s but remained a reclusive figure whose work was relatively unknown by the time of her death in 1886. Her sister Lavinia later discovered nearly 1,800 of her poems after she died and insisted that they were published posthumously. Eventually, Dickinson came to be regarded as one of America’s most important writers, and the Emily Dickinson House is now a National Historic Landmark. :
