At one time, the aurochs’ range extended across Europe, the Middle East, and northern Africa, but by the 13th century, the population was limited to eastern Europe, and the last one died in 1627. The aurochs was still alive when added to the coat of arms of Moldavia, a former nation that included parts of present-day Moldova and Romania. When Moldova declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the aurochs was once again added to the new coat of arms, which is featured in the center of the Moldovan flag. :
