Alaska - On March 30, 1867, the U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward orchestrated the purchase of the Alaska territory — which was roughly one-fifth the size of the rest of the United States — from Russia. At a price of $7 million, the purchase worked out to about two cents per acre, but it was widely criticized in Congress as “Seward’s Folly.” Why would anyone want to spend that much on what was popularly termed a "polar bear garden" at the time? Of course, Alaska later proved to be rich in oil, gold, and other minerals, so Seward’s purchase seems to have paid off in the end.:
