The city’s oldest church dates back to 1831. As the city expanded, church leaders were pushed to move the church to a cheaper site in the suburbs, but they insisted on staying in the city center. Architectural firm Holabird and Roche (who built Chicago’s City Hall) was hired to design a skyscraper topped by a traditional church spire. The spire of the 21-floor building tops out at 568 feet and caps the Sky Chapel, the world’s highest church, at 400 feet.:
