The stone structure is precariously balanced on two small pedestals and appears to have been sliced perfectly in half. In addition, the rock is a petroglyph, meaning that there are a variety of ancient carvings on its flat face, including horses and an ibex. Many scientists believe that the rock's iconic split was caused by shifting tectonic plates. Since the pedestals it balances on are situated off-kilter, the movement of the earth put too much force on the formation's center, cracking the rock in two.:
