Stretching two full city blocks beneath Midtown Manhattan, the station serves a staggering 600,000 people on an average weekday. Penn Station is the center point of the busy Northeast Corridor with Amtrak trains that connect Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Despite the volume of passengers, the station itself is decidedly less grand in scale, with low ceilings and crowded corridors that make it a place most New Yorkers try to avoid. The original Penn Station head house was a far more ornate Beaux-Arts building that was sadly torn down in 1963. Luckily, construction on a reimagined Penn Station is currently underway.:
