Nicknamed the “Chocolate Falls,” the 185-foot-tall Grand Falls of Arizona are actually taller than Niagara Falls, but they only reach their full power in March and April, after the snow melts in the nearby White Mountains. But for the rest of the year, the falls aren’t quite so impressive. As the Little Colorado River flows from the mountains on its way to the Grand Canyon, its waters pick up brown and red silt from the sandstone below, which forms the distinctive color of the falls. Grand Falls resulted from a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago; cooling molten rock built up both a natural dam and the various tiers of rock that the chocolatey water flows over.:
